Acer announces updated Swift, Spin, and Switch notebooks in IFA 2017

Acer has been pushing a lot of thin notebooks in the market with their Swift, Spin, and Switch laptops from last year. This year, Acer isn’t shying away from releasing thin and lightweight laptops based on their updated notebooks in IFA 2017.

Swift 7 Black Edition

First up is the Swift 7 Black Edition, the first fanless notebook with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce 150MX and a Coffee Lake-based (8th gen) processor. It also comes with a 13.5-inch IPS display with at 2256 x 1504 and an embedded stylus. What’s interesting about the Swift 7 Black Edition aside from its updated specs is how it was able to achieve its fanless design.

Acer is calling their new technology LiquidLoop. Essentially, it’s a closed-loop liquid cooler that expels heat without using fans or exhaust fans in order to eliminate dust circulating within the system. The LiquidLoop system works by transferring heat from the CPU to the heat pipe via a thermal conductor, which runs through a single direction, two phase flow of liquid. Basically, once the liquid is heated, it evaporates then once it’s done dissipating the heat, the liquid then condensates into liquid once more and the cycle begins again. This isn’t really new technology as phase-changing cooling has been available for some time now, but this is the first time someone has implemented it in a laptop. This could make fixing the Swift 7 Black Edition by yourself a bit of a hassle since any kind of pressure change in the loop could ruin the whole system.

Acer’s newest Swift 7 Black Edition will be available sometime in December starting at USD 1,699 or around PhP 90,000.

Swift 5

Unlike the Swift 7 Black Edition, the Swift 5 sticks to a more conventional design. Both the top and bottom cover is made from magnesium-lithium alloy while the keyboard area uses magnesium-alumim alloy. Altogether, the Swift 5 only weighs less than 1kg. Despite being lightweight, the Swift 5 still packs a punch with a Coffee Lake-based Intel processor, 2×2 802.11 ac, and it comes Windows 10 pre-installed. The screen is a multi-touch 1080p IPS touchscreen display with narrow bezels to maximize viewing experience. Acer claims that the Swift 5’s battery can provide up to 8 hours of juice.

The Swift 5 will be available for around USD 999 in December. Just in time for the Holidays.

Spin 5

Designed for both work and play, the Spin 5 retains its convertible form-factor to seamlessly change from a laptop, tablet, and display and tent modes for easy use wherever you go. It comes with a 13.0-inch model which weighs around 1.5kg and only measures at 15.9mm. Meanwhile, its bigger brother is a 15.0-inch model that weighs over 2kg and measures 17.9mm. Inside the Spin 5 laptops are Intel’s Coffee Lake processors, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 for the 15.0-inch model. Acer claims that the battery can also last up to 13 hours. As for its display, the Spin 5 siblings will come with a 1080p IPS display.

The Spin 5 will come earlier that the Swift 5 and Swift 7 Black Edition in September with prices starting at USD 799 for both models.
