AMD outs 2nd generation Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and 2920X

AMD has officially announced that they are bolstering their second generation Ryzen Threadripper processors with the 2970WX and 2920X. With more cores and threads, these new processors caters to the demands of creators and innovators for the most intense workloads.

Built on the Zen+ architecture, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX uses four eight-core CCXs with one two cores disabled per CCX, which leads to a total core count of 24 cores. The processor also comes with AMD’s SMT technology which is essentially their take on Hyperthreading. This means that the 2970WX comes with a total of 24 cores and 48 threads that can reach up to 4.2GHz from its base clock of 3.0GHz.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X, meanwhile, comes with a more humble 12-core, 24-thread setup but is running at a higher base clock of 3.5GHz and a higher boost clock of 4.2GHz as well as 32MB of cache.

Model Cores/Threads Boost/Base Frequency (GHz) L3 Cache (MB) TDP (Watts) PCIe 3.0 Lanes Price

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X 24-Dec 4.3/3.5 32 180W 64 $649

Both processors are compatible with the AMD X399 platform and comes with a total of 64 PCIe lanes. Here’s a quick breakdown of the available second generation Ryzen Threadrippers from AMD:

Both the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and 2920X will be available in the market on October 29, 2018 while the 2950X and 2990WX have already hit store shelves.
