Android P now officially known as Android 9 Pie

-

The newest iteration of Android has arrived. With a focus on the latest features found on smartphones like AI capabilities, Android 9 Pie aims to improve user experience by predicting the next task for faster processing and prioritize battery power for the apps that users use most.

Adaptive Battery and Brightness

Android 9 Pie now comes baked with features such as Adaptive Battery, which learns that apps that users use most and prioritizes battery life for each and every app that users have. Google takes battery saving further by having Adaptive Brightness that automatically learns the brightness that users have in different apps and does it reactively.

Anticipating what you do next

Google is streamlining the Android experience in Android 9 Pie with App Actions. With App Actions, the OS predicts what users will do next based on context and displays that run on the smartphone. Actions such as Google Maps or Music Player will now be suggested depending on the frequency of the usage of a certain app.

Later this year, Google will also be rolling out Slices for Android 9 Pie, which will show relevant information from your most used apps.

Easier UI Navigation

In Android 9 Pie, Google will be introducing a new system navigation via a single home button. With smartphones having larger and larger displays every year, Google is aiming to do all with a single home button.

This singular button will feature a newly designed Overview when the user swipes up. This Overview will show full-screen previews of recently used apps. The new UI will also have Smart Text Selection that recognizes the meaning of the text that users are selecting and suggests relevant actions.

Better support for modern screens

It’s no secret that the notch and 19:9 displays have taken over the market. With Android’s new release, smartphones can now take advantage of edge-to-edge screens via a display cutout support. This means that the status bar is now separated from the rest of the content on display.

These are just some of the major revisions that Google has done in the Android ecosystem in Pie. There’s a whole slew of changes, you can check them out via the Google Blog.

The first devices to receive the Android 9 Pie are, as usual, Google’s own Pixel devices. Other smartphones in the market, however, are expected to have their Android 9 Pie release later this year.
