Set to release later this year, rumors on the Internet points that Apple is currently testing 3D face scanning technology to unlock the iPhone 8 instead of the becoming-standard fingerprint sensors.

It is being rumored that Apple’s sensor can unlock the iPhone in just a few hundred milliseconds. It is even designed to work when the iPhone 8 is lying on a table. The 3D face scanning is a lot more secure than fingerprint since it takes more data points from your face rather than your finger print.

Samsung has also used biometric scanners to unlock the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

The 3D sensor has 3D depth perception, which means that the system is much less prone from being tricked with a printed picture of your face.

It’s important to note that Apple is not the first company that has tested biometric authentication to unlock a smartphone. Samsung has implemented an iris scanner and a face recognition system on the Galaxy S8 way before any rumors about the iPhone 8’s 3D face scanning technology surfaced.
