The ASUS ZenFone 5 is reborn with a notched screen and AI capabilities

ASUS has finally announced the fifth generation of the ZenFone smartphones. This generation comes with three SKUs: the ZenFone 5, the ZenFone 5Z, and the ZenFone 5Q; all of which are aiming to deliver the same price-to-performance ratio that the original ZenFone series brought to the smartphone market.

Both the ASUS ZenFone 5 and 5Z sport a 6.2-inch display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2246 x 1080. With such a large screen fitted on a 5.5-inch body, ASUS was able to reach a 90% screen-to-body ratio with these smartphones. These displays are also capable of display DCI-P3 wide color gamut, 500nits of brightness, and is backed up by ASUS’ AI Display and 2.5D Gorilla Glass.

These two also come with a dual camera setup. A 12MP primary camera powered by a Sony IMX 363 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture with OIS/EIS, PDAF, Night HDR, 4K recording, and RAW file support. The secondary 8MP camera sticks to a wider angle with a 120° field of view. The ZenFone 5’s camera also includes AI Scene Detection in order for the camera to automatically detect 16 different scenes and objects to properly apply the correct exposure.

The only difference about the ZenFone 5 and the 5Z is their SoCs. The former having a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 paired with 4GB of RAM while the latter has a much more bleeding-edge Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with 6GB of RAM. Both smartphones will come with 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 2TB via the microSD slot.
