ASUS ROG outs new Coffee Lake-based desktops and notebooks

The latest and greatest ASUS ROG desktops and notebooks are now available for purchase. Composed of the FX504, Zephyrus M, new Hero and Scar Editions, the ROG GL12, and G21 Hurracan, these new devices come with Intel’s 8th generation Coffee Lake processors paired with NVIDIA’s Pascal GPUs.

ASUS ROG FX504

ASUS is levelling up their FX lineup of notebooks by introducing The Ultimate Force (TUF) gaming series. The TUF series, originally a lineup exclusive for their motherboards, has been made available for their gaming notebooks to deliver better performance, durability, and a longer warranty.

The FX504 comes Intel’s 8th generation Coffee Lake-H processors for mobile devices. The display is a 15.6-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS display while the GPU can be specced up to an NVIDIA GTX 1060.

Thermals have been improved compared to other iterations of the FX series with a 12V battery as well as anti-dust thermal tunnels.  If the fans become too loud for you especially in light workloads, you can turn on the silent mode in order to ease the spinning of the fan.

ASUS ROG Strix Hero and Scar Edition

These new variants of the Hero and Scar edition gaming notebooks can now come with an Intel Core i7-8850H, which is a 6-core processor. You can also deck out your notebook with up to 32GB of RAM, 512GB SSD paired with a 2TB HDD, and up to an NVIDIA GTX 1070 GPU.

Other changes include a better cooling fan with the previous 5V fan being replaced with a new 12V fan. The added air intake can also push more dust in to your notebook’s chassis. ASUS has resolved this problem with an anti-dust thermal tunnel that ejects the dust while air is circulating inside the chassis. If you want to stay silent and don’t really need extreme performance if you’re just working on spreadsheets, you can also activate Silent Mode to let the fans ramp down.

The new Hero and Scar also comes with improved displays. The Hero variant now comes with a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 130% sRGB. The Scar edition, on the other hand, now comes with an even faster 144Hz display.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus M

The original ASUS ROG Zephyrus was hailed as one of the best showing of ASUS in Computex 2017. Hailed as the thinnest gaming notebook with an NVIDIA GTX 1080, the Zephyrus has now met its match; the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M (GM501).

The most significant departure of the Zephyrus M from its predecessor is its thicker size, which now measuring at 19.9mm compared to the 16.8mm of the original Zephyrus. Despite the increase thickness, ASUS has found a way to fit a 1TB FireCuda (or a 2TB HDD) as well as increase the battery life for up to 3x compared to the original Zephyrus.

Cooling of the Zephyrus M has been improved as well. The fan has been upped from a 5V fan to a 12V fan that allows for a stronger fan. Fan size has been increased by 33% and the number of fan blades to 71 all of which allows for 15% better airflow. Better airflow might also mean more dust that can flow through the chassis, right? Well, ASUS has solved that problem by placing anti-dust thermal tunnels just beside the exhaust that channels and blows it out outside the chassis.

Performance has been upped from the 7th generation processors from the previous version to an 8th generation Coffee Lake-H i5-8850H with 6-cores and 12-threads with a Base Clock of 2.6GHz and a maximum Boost Clock of 4.3GHz. It also comes with 9MB of L3 cache and a 45W TDP. This Coffee Lake-H processor is backed by up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 512GB NVMe SSD.

ASUS ROG Strix GL12

ROG’s newest pre-built desktop, the Strix GL12 comes with all the amenities that a top-end rig should have. The Strix GL12 can be decked up to an Intel Core i7 8700K, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 107080, and up to 64GB of RAM. You can even show off all the internals with the Strix GL12 with its transparent side panel.
