Both the ASUS ZenFone 8 and 8 Flip has been officially unveiled worldwide. Both are positioned side-by-side as flagships of the range with the former having a more traditional form factor while the 8 Flip packing a motorized camera module that acts as both front and back camera setups.
The ASUS ZenFone 8 sticks to the traditional mold of a flagship device. It packs in a cacophony of high-end features like Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.
It has a slightly smaller 5.9-inch 2400 x 1080 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1100nits. The smaller screen was done in accordance to market research saying some people still find medium-sized smartphones to be their preference.
The ZenFone 8 packs a simpler camera setup at the back with a Sony IMX686-powered 64MP f/1.8 Quad Bayer main lens and a Sony IMX363 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide lens that supports 4cmc macro shots. The main lens is capable of taking 8K24fps video with EIS and OIS while the secondary camera supports 4K60fps video. It also gets a 12MP f/2.2 front-facing camera that has a Sony IMX663 sensor with support for Dual PDAF.
The ASUS ZenFone 8 Flip comes with most of the internals found on the vanilla model like a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and up to 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. It does come with a slightly larger 5,000mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 4.0 and PD Charging.
Those who prefer a larger display will be happy to know that the 8 Flip has a 6.67-inch 2400 x 1080 Samsung AMOLED with 90Hz refresh rate, 110% DCI-P3 color gamut, and 1000nits peak brightness.
The motorized camera module makes a comeback on the ZenFone 8 Flip, thus its moniker. It houses a total of three cameras, two of which are the same main lens and ultrawide camera as the 8. Adding to the formula, however, is an 8MP telephoto lens capable of 3x optical zoom and up to 12x total zoom.
Since the camera platform is motorized to flip, the three rear cameras also double as the device’s front-facing lenses. Users can also manually adjust the angle of which the module opens for an additional layer of creativity while taking photos.
Both the ASUS ZenFone 8 and 8 Flip can now be pre-order in select regions around the world starting at EUR 800. No word yet if ASUS will be bringing the device into the Philippines but we expect that this lunch may mark the return of ZenFone.
