The Canon EOS R8 is arriving in the Philippines. It combines the features of the EOS R6 Mark II including Canon Log 3 and up to 40fps continuous shooting while still being portable like the EOS RP.
Designed for content creation and professional video making, the EOS R8 comes with a full-frame 24.2MP CMOS sensor that enables 6K Oversampling and up to 4K UHD footage at 60fps up to 30 minutes. If longevity is a concern, you can turn down to 4K30fps with no recording time restriction.
The camera also supports FullHD as high as 180fps that will produce videos with 30fps with action slowed down to 1/6 the speed. Canon claims that rolling shutter distortion is reduced to almost half of the EOS RP when shooting at 4K30fps or 25fps.
Canon has made the EOS R8 20g lighter than the EOS RP at about 461g including the battery and SD card. It Is equipped with Movie Digital IS that digitally performs tilt correction and 5-axis image stabilization during video to make handheld shooting easier even with lenses without optical image stabilization.
It will support 8-bit recording and 10-bit 4:2:2 HDR video. Canon Log 3 offers the same level of information while providing more flexibility for heavier post-processing workflows that involve color grading. Natively, the camera will have ISO 102,400 while shooting and ISO 25,600 for video to enhance low-light usability.
Its EOS iTR AF X system can detect and tract people, animals, and vehicles using deep learning. It identifies other subjects and locks onto them using characteristics like shape, color, and brightness. This allows it to get focus as fast as 0.03 seconds.
The Canon EOS R8 will also include focus breathing correction, false colors and zebras, aspect marker display, USB Video Class (UVC), USB Audio Class (UAC), and plug-and-play direct transmission of audio and FullHD video to a computer for streaming.
The Canon EOS R8 is priced at PhP 107,998 for body only while the Kit variant with an RF24-50mm f/4.5 – 6.3 IS STM lens costs PhP 122,998. It is now available via Canon Image Squares, Canon concept stores, Canon Lazada and Shopee flagship stores, and authorized retail partners nationwide.
In addition, EOS R8 customers can get a free 128GB SD Card and a free Lens Loan Voucher worth PhP 5,000. There will also be access to discounted rates to a Basic Videography workshop. The camera will hit the retail market starting mid-April 2023.
