There are three upgrades for the Contact Beam. Two upgrades can be obtained during your travels and another one can be bought from the store once you get it from Chapter 4 of the game.
Although these upgrades can be missed, you can still get back to them during certain periods in the game. If you find yourself missing one or two, wait until you get to Chapter 10 to fully explore the Ishimura and then head back to get them.

Upgrade Perk: Supersymmetry Tether – applies damage over time to each shot.
Visit the store after getting the Contact Beam in Chapter 4 and purchase this upgrade for $12,000.
Upgrade Perk: Portable Heliotron – greatly increases ammunition capacity.
You can get this upgrade during the free roam segment of Chapter 10. To do so, head back to the Medical Deck and make your way to the level 3 locked room. You’ll immediately see the upgrade on top of a workbench once you open the door to the room.
Upgrade Perk: Diffraction Module – greatly increases explosion size of the Secondary Fire
To get this upgrade, you must first complete the side quest “You Are Not Authorized” to get the Master Override Keycard. The Master Override Keycard allows you access to locked rooms and crates above security level 3 and the third upgrade for the Contact beam is located in such room.
To get this weapon upgrade, head over to the Mining Deck. Proceed until you get to the room where you have to move the crates using kinesis. Arrange the crates in a way that opens a path to your right. After clearing the path, unlock the room and head over to the left-most corner of the room. Interact with the box to finally get the last upgrade to the Contact Beam.
Make weapons deadlier and perform better in combat through the use of upgrades. Weapon upgrades can be done by going to a bench and using a Node to upgrade a specific stat. You can also use a Node to unlock special perks that increases the effects of the weapon. This is a reversible process and you can pay credits to remove Nodes and to allocate them again to a different weapon.
