Epson’s Moverio Smart Glasses may pave the way for better AR usage

You might be familiar in the terms Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality as they are terms thrown about by the tech industry for the past few years. These technologies, however, hasn’t been fully implemented in our daily lives. This is especially true for Virtual Reality.

Augmented Reality, however, has seen a rise in usage especially in the consumer sector. Consumer products has also been infected with the AR virus with smartphones and games such as Pokemon Go using the technology to deliver better experience to the user.

The use of Augmented Reality, however, isn’t restricted to the consumer market. Companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook has also taken notice of the technology and develop toolsets to take advantage of AR.

Epson has also taken advantage of AR with their Moverio smart glasses. Launched in Southeast Asia back in 2012, the latest models of the Moverio smart glasses; BT-350 and BT-2200, now offer video and access to new AR experience for the commercial and industrial market.

Epson’s Moverio smart glasses are also helping the medical industry by allowing surgeons and medical personnel by freeing them from manually handling data and focus more on complex tasks. Even dentists have benefited from the use of AR by having an overlay over the patient’s teeth for better hand-eye coordination and precise treatment time.

It is likely that adoption of AR may reach a tipping point this years. Developers are expected to launch new apps to grow the commercial and consumer markets. They are also working to overcome issues such as predictive head motion tracking to reduce “motion to photon” latency. More horsepower on the glasses may also lead to thermal issues for the user.

As smart glasses mature, there is no saying what could happen in the next few years for AR. We cannot, however, deny that they have transformed the industry for the better. Hopefully, they will become more commonplace and be the world’s next transformative technology.
