Unfortunately, you cannot save Gustave. Sad. His death is a climactic and emotional moment in the game and it does add to the stakes at play. Him shielding Maelle from the White-haired Man, makes him a real bro to not just Maelle, but also to the whole team. Definitely will be missed. But is he truly dead?

However, to dispel some lingering hope, yes, Gustave is actually dead. You will bury him in a story event after you traverse the Forgotten Battlefield.
Well, to put it bluntly, you can actually save Gustave, albeit a little too late. Like end-of-the-game late. Expedition 33 ends with you choosing between two endings, one of which results in Gustave being resurrected from the dead. Not only that but his lover, Sophie, also gets back on her feet. Sweet? Probably. Is it the correct ending? Some might argue that it’s not. Either way, Gustave living may have fulfilled some hopes but may have also dashed some as you get to know what it requires for him to continue to live.
