As always, spoilers ahead!

Esquie’s skills, aside from the last one, are all part of the story and cannot be missed. At the onset, you might spot some hard to traverse parts of the map. Be patient and play on. To get to those seemingly unreachable parts, you first need to unlock Esquie’s abilities. Once you gain said abilities, you also gain more freedom in navigating the map.
Once Esquie can fly, which is the latter third of the game, the world map reveals itself in full. You can explore any location and even fly to those floating islands above. It is recommended that you do explore the map fully during this time as you can easily traverse any geographical obstacle by just flying over them.
While not a traversal skill, the final relationship scene (max is 7) with Esquie unlocks a Gradient Attack for Verso, Angel’s Eyes. The skill description is as follows:
Deals extreme Physical Damage. 8 hits. Gain 1 additional Perfection per hit. Applies Aureole to Verso, reviving him if he dies.
