In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, players are ultimately given the final choice in the game: to choose an ending. After toiling dozens of hours, players can finally conclude the epic story of the game. Get to know which ending is the best, how to check the other ending, and more using this guide! Obviously, spoilers ahead!
Verso’s ending results in him expelling Maelle from the canvas. Knowing that allowing Maelle stay would slowly kill her in the process, Verso decides to fight Maelle. This decision results in the defeat of Maelle and the freedom of the remaining soul of the true Verso (the painting boy). However, as expected, all members of the Expedition 33 team are removed from existence as the painter’s soul ceases to paint. The scene then shifts to Maelle’s family as they grieve the death of Verso together. The ending concludes with the Expedition 33 team waving goodbye as they turn to petals.
Maelle’s ending results in the death of Verso and the continued existence of the Canvas. While slowly “dying”, Verso cries out that he does not want to live like this. The scene then shifts to a theater in which Maelle reunites with members of the team, including Gustave and Sophie. They sit inside a packed theater to watch a hesitant Verso as he tries to play the piano. The ending concludes with a jump scare, the whole screen being taken by Maelle’s scarred face, vaguely hinting to either her slow descent to madness or deteriorating health.
So far, developers have yet to confirm which ending is canon. Given that Expedition 33 is a stand-alone game (so far), there is no immediate need to confirm how the game ends. However, that might change once we get a sequel or a spin-off as there might be some need to confirm how the story ultimately developed.
One thing is for sure though: they want people to discuss the ending. No ending is a sure good ending and as Renoir says before the final fight, in verbatim, we are all forced to make difficult choices.
If you find your choice of an ending a bummer, fret not. You can still view the other ending! You can do this by reloading your save. After doing so, once you are in the game, open the menu and select from your previous saves. Load a prior save and play again so you can see the other ending.
