Exynos 980 is the first 5G-integrated chip from Samsung

Samsung is adding another chipset in its growing portfolio of mobile chips. The Samsung Exynos 980 separates itself from previous outings by having the first native 5G-integration in a processor from the brand.

The Samsung Exynos 980 is based on an 8nm FinFET process that integrated 5G as well as AI Intelligence processing. This new chip allows lower power consumption as well as increase the space efficiency within a device.

The chip supports 5G to 2G networks and provides fast gigabit downlink speed in 4G LTE as well as up to 2.55 gigabits speeds in sub-6GHz 5G. The chip’s model will also support E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC), which combines 2CC LTE and 5G connectivity to maximize mobile downlink speed of up to 3.55Gbps.

Aside from faster mobile transfer speeds, the Exynos 980 will support the 802.11ax (WiFi 6) standard. This will provide faster download and upload speeds whenever a device with the chip connects to a supported access point.

The Samsung Exynos 980 will packs two high-performance Cortex-A77 CPU cores and six efficient Cortex-A55 cores. For graphics, the chip will have a Mali-G76 GPU. Samsung is promising better support for intricate UX designs and high-resolution games.

The Neural Processing Unit (NPU) inside the Exynos 980 has been improved to deliver up to 2.7x the performance of its predecessor. With this level of performance in tow, the NPU can now add enhancements to applications such as secure user authentication, content filtering, mixed reality, intelligent camera, among others.

The chip can support up to 108MP sensors. Meanwhile, its advance image signal processor can support up to 5 individual sensors and is able to process three concurrently for a richer multi-camera experience.

For video, it supports encoding and decoding of 4K UHD videos at 120fps as well as HDR10+ support with dynamic mapping.

Samsung expects that the Exynos 980 will hit mass production by the end of this year. This means that Exynos 980-based devices will hit the market within 2020.
