In Hogwarts Legacy, players get to encounter a Thestral, bat-like horse creature. Get to know where to find the Thestral and its location, how to use it, quest needed, and more using this guide.
For other magical beasts, check out the Magical Beast List.
The Thestral can be found at two locations on the map. These wild Thestrals cannot be mounted and can only be captured for their resource and for breeding.
The Thestral can be unlocked as a flying mount that you can use for traveling around the map. However, unlike the Hippogriff, Highwind, you must pay a bit more to unlock it. Get the Dark Arts DLC via the Deluxe Edition to get the Thestral mount, Sepulchria, as part of your stable.
You can use the Thestral included in the Dark Arts DLC after you escape with Highwing in the main mission, “The High Keep”. The Thestral uses the same control scheme as the Hippogriff and is neither faster nor slower. The only difference between the two flying mounts is the appearance. Aside from the Thestral, you can also another legendary beast, the Graphorn.
Although you do look majestic on a Thestral, the maneuverability and the speed of an upgraded Broom is better. There’s apparently no in-game advantage in using a Thestral. As it stands, it’s way easier to go around with a Broom than with a Thestral.
The Thestral can be captured and bred for Thestral Hairs. You can use the material to upgrade equipment using the Enchanted Loom.
The Thestral is a haunting, winged equine beast that is only visible to those who have seen death.
