How To Beat The Oni – Ghost Of Yotei

The Tale of the Oni

Taking down the Oni is the ultimate challenge and ending of “The Tale of the Oni” story mission. It requires Atsu to covertly scale the Ishikari Castle together with her brother, Jubei. Upon reaching its peak, Atsu finally confronts one of her parents’ killers, the Oni. The fight is split into two different stages.

First Fight Against The Oni

Watch Out For Red Glint Attacks

Red Glint attacks are strikes that you cannot block. The Oni uses his Odachi to deliver heavy strikes quickly and with quite a range. Counter this by timing your dodges and then counterattacking once he finishes his attack.

Disarm And Strike

disarm the oni

The duel area in this first fight is small so if you disarm the Oni, you can lock him to a corner for a good amount of time. Use your Spirit to disarm the Oni and land some easy strikes. Try to prevent him to reach his Odachi as much as you can.

Transition To Second Fight

Once you land enough hits and whittle down the Oni’s Health to about 10%, he goes and does a red glint attack. This attack cannot be dodged and always hits Atsu, throwing you out of the window. This is the end of the first fight and the beginning of the second, more tougher one.

Second Fight Against The Oni

Beware Of Quick Attacks

The Oni has more combos in this second stage compared to the first one. Be wary of his fast attacks and try. Don’t worry about the speed as you can also use Perfect Counter or Perfect Dodge against his strikes. Be calm and memorize the patterns and timing so you can get in some damage.

Can Disarm You

The Oni can use yellow glint attacks to disarm Atsu. Use dodge to counter this one if you don’t have the Odachi yet. If you feel that you can’t perfectly dodge the attack, just roll back and wait for it to miss. In case you get hit, don’t panic. Use dodge rolls to reach your blade and try to get away from the Oni as much as you can.

Has Ranged Fire Attacks

The burning Odachi is not just for show. The Oni can use ranged fire attacks to keep you on your toes if you move a bit far. The attacks not only cause damage when they land but also leaves flames on the ground in a “V” pattern. Beware of these flames as Atsu can get damage over time when you step and stand on them. Try to lure the Oni away from the lingering flames to reduce your chances of getting sustained damage.

Rewards For Beating The Oni

Get The Oni’s Mask

the oni's mask
Item Description
Lord Hyozo. A broken man behind a broken mask.

It was glory that burned in Hyozo’s heart, not loyalty. Glory was lost at the battle of Nagashino. Shot by a peasant and trapped under his own horse, he learned what it meant to be powerless and afraid.

From that fear, the Oni was born.

As a reward for beating the Oni, Atsu gets a special mask. Worn by the Oni, the mask also offers a glimps on what the Oni was.

One Killer Down

The Oni is one of the killers that Atsu wants to take down to avenge her family. Coincidentally, the Oni is a grizzled veteran general of Saito, making him one of Saito’s top lieutenants. Killing the Oni not only satisfies Atsu’s desire for revenge but also eliminates the terrors and lawlessness in Ishikari Plains.

Ghost of Yotei is now out on the PS5 and you can purchase it either online via the official PS5 product page or via your local game stores.
