Unboxing and First Impressions: Huawei Y7p

Huawei Y7P Unboxing 1

For the past few years, ugly notches were a trend in the smartphone world. But the effort to alleviate this trend for 2019 was much better — it was either a motorized pop-up camera or the minimal hole-punch display. The Huawei Y7p is the latest device from the company to sport a selfie camera cutout that’s literally just the camera. Paired with small bezels, it helps to almost completely give you a full-screen experience.

Unboxing the Huawei Y7p

Opening up the box, you’ll be greeted with the Y7p in its full glory. Under that, you’ll have your SIM card ejector, a free transparent jelly case, then a micro-USB cable and the power brick.

Design and Build Quality

As for the design, the Huawei Y7p follows a colorful design trend — colorful backs. It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that phone colors are often dull like Apple’s iPhones with their usual black, white and silver option. So anytime a company decides to do something else, it really catches everyone’s attention. And Huawei did not disappoint. If you’re on the hunt for unique-looking smartphones, the Y7p’s blue-green gradient paint job will surely catch anyone’s attention.

All the buttons — power and volume rocker — are located on the right side. At the bottom, you’ll see a familiar layout: headphone jack, charging port, and speakers from left to right. On the left side is the hybrid SIM tray in which you can insert two SIM cards and a microSD for your expandable storage needs.

For the display, the Huawei Y7p sports a 6.39-inch HD+ LCD screen. Coupled with the hole-punch camera and slim bezels, you’ll get a full-screen media viewing experience without any hindrance. The Y7p has good viewing angles, ample but not overwhelming colors, and a good amount of sharpness to satisfy my video consumption.

Camera

The phone’s camera comes with Huawei’s popular AI to assist you in taking the best stills. There are three cameras at the back: 48MP as the main with 8MP ultra-wide and 2MP depth shooters for landscapes and portrait shots.

Pictures that come from the main shooter did not disappoint and the AI will provide you with some more vibrant colors when you enable it. The wide-angle lens did a good job of capturing the scenery with minimal distortion. It’s fair enough to say that it is capable of any given situations but we still have to test it in our full review.

Software and Performance

The Huawei Y7p runs on EMUI 9.1.1.72. The performance was smooth and did not present any hiccups in general use, it did not slow down and I did not have any apps closing. It sports the Kirin 710F with 4GB so any apps and games won’t have any problems running smoothly. With 4000mAh of battery capacity, you’ll be able to get by the day with light to medium use. Check out our benchmarks in the full review of the device.

First Impressions

I am very satisfied with the general performance of the Huawei Y7p, the processor and RAM are capable with my usual needs. The build quality and design are modern and premium-looking. Huawei did a great job of creating a modern device with its colors and hole-punch display. And with specs like a 4000mAh, Kirin 710F, and multiple cameras, the Y7p is proving to be quite the contender in the market.

The Y7p comes with a price tag of PHP 9,990. Starting today until February 27, you can pre-order your device through Lazada and Shopee and get a Bluetooth speaker, 50GB cloud storage for three months, 500 Huawei Points via the App Gallery and a power bank worth PHP 1,499. On top of that, customers who pre-order get a PhP 1,000 voucher for the FreeBuds 3 (claiming starts on February 28 until March 9) and a 50% cashback available for the first 10 customers.
