ASUS has just unveiled their newest innovation in consumer notebooks. With the ZenBook Pro UX580 and UX480, the touch pad has been improved by being a secondary screen all by itself. Designed to improve productivity, the secondary screen has all the bells and whistles you’d want for a mini-second screen.
Dubbed the ScreenPad, the 5.5-inch FullHD secondary screen placed on the touch pad offers an interactive experience to its user. The display can be used in a plethora of ways; including having tools such as Calculator, Music Player, Number pad, Program Launcher, ASUS Sync. The most important feature, however, is its ability to act as a secondary screen.
As a secondary screen, it becomes infinitely more useful than having a touch pad. From here you can pretty much place any kind of app or program on the display. Switching modes is just as easy as pressing the F6 key to switch from secondary screen to a normal touch pad or an app.
At the time of writing, only programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint take full functionality of the ScreenPad. ASUS, however, is working with other software developers to have other features integrated on the display.
Aside from programs, there are also browser extensions that can be used with the ScreenPad. Videos from websites such as YouTube transfers their video playback controls on the ScreenPad instead of the main display for a completely uninterrupted watching experience.
As for the main display, the ZenBook Pro UX580 can be decked with a 15.6-inch IPS NanoEdge UHD display that supports capacitive multi-touch. Screen also supports PANTONE Validated color rendering and comes out of the factory already calibrated with the screen having only a Delta-E value of just .2.
On the processing front of the ZenBook is backed by up to an Intel Core i9-8950HK, up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti MaxQ. For storage, the notebook will come with up to 1TB of NVMe PCIe SSD.
The ports of the ASUS ZenBook Pro UX580 include two USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A ports, two USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C ports with support for Thunderbolt 3, a 3.5mm audio jack, an HDMI 1.4 port, a microSD card reader, and a DC jack for charging.
