Although TikTok has restored its service in the US a day after its ban, the ban has also affected the ByteDance-owned video editing software CapCut. Instagram immediately took advantage of the situation and released Edits – their own video editing alternative to CapCut.
Edits was formally announced by Instagram head Adam Mossero on his account on the platform. It is currently up for pre-order on the Apple App Store and is expected to hit the market on March 13, 2025. An Android version is in the works, but its status is currently “Coming Soon.”
Much like CapCut, Edits allows for easier editing of vertical-style videos for social media sites. Standard tools such as video overlays, caption generation, voice overs, and green screen. There’s generative AI that allows you to animate images.
The app does have Instagram integration that enables you to see live insights such as viewer engagements and metrics. It also has an on-board camera that lets you capture video on a single app.
