There must be pigs flying outside. Longtime rivals Intel and AMD have teamed up with each other to bring an Intel Core CPU multi-chip module (MCM), which combines the Coffee Lake-H CPU die with a Vega-based GPU from AMD.
To be clear, Intel isn’t teaming up with AMD’s processor department but with Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) which is a different entity altogether. RTG was responsible for the recently released Vega-based GPUs. This new module from will partner a Coffee Lake-H CPU die with a 14nm Vega GPU.
Unlike AMD’s APUs which integrates the CPU and the GPU onto a same die, Intel’s MCM will use an Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge. This allows the CPU, GPU, and HBM2 memory to be linked together via the PCIe 3.0 bus.
This allows manufacturers to create lighter and more portable devices since the CPU and GPU are so close together. AMD has also announced their own mobile platform with the Ryzen and Vega combo that will be unveiled some time in CES 2018. Hopefully, this will be the end of the Intel HD era.
