MediaTek Dimensity 800 could bring 5G into the mid-range segment

-

While 2019 brought upon us 5G, they still remain a staple of high-end smartphones. The new MediaTek Dimensity 800 chip aims to bring 5G capabilities to the mid-range segment, which is a price point more palatable to most people.

The MediaTek Dimensity 800 comes with an octa-core CPU arrangement composed of four Cortex-A76 cores at 2.0GHz and four low power 2.0GHz Cortex-A55 cores. Graphics performance is provided by a four-core Mali-G77 GPU.

The 5G modem inside the chip supports sub-6GHz support and can deliver download speeds of 3.5Gbps and 1.25Gbps upload. If 5G is unavailable, the modem is able to use 4G and 3G networks if needed.

The modem also include NSA/SA support, two carrier aggregation, Voice over New Radio, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing. The integrated 5G modem is also expected to deliver better energy efficiency over other solutions in in the market.

Aside from faster performance and networks speeds, the Dimensity 800 will also support AI HDR, Facial Detection hardware, multi-frame 4K video HDR, and up to 90Hz refresh rates on displays.

The first smartphones equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 800 are expected to hit international shelves within the first half of 2020.
