The latest on the ever-growing MediaTek chipsets on smartphones, the MediaTek Helio P90 will feature the brand’s most powerful AI capabilities yet and better overall performance.

MediaTek’s newest chipset – Helio P90 – is an AI powerhouse that brings premium smartphone experiences to the mass market

To provide processing power, the Helio P90 is ditching older Arm Cortex CPU cores and replacing them with DynamIQ CPU cores, which is composed of two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores running at 2.0GHz for a total core count of eight CPU cores.

For its graphics, the Helio P90’s GPU has been upped to a PowerVR GM 9446. With MediaTek’s CorePilot technology, the Helio P90 will make sure that everything in the chip will be running more efficiently than before.

Better AI capabilities compared to previous generations

MediaTek is upping the performance in AI capabilities with its APU 2.0. This new generation promises to generate 1127GMACs, which is 4.6x more compared to the offerings of the Helio P60 and P70. MediaTek is backing their AI performance with a ton of research and development. Based on tests performed by ETH Zurich, the Helio P90 scored a 25,645 while the Kirin 980 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 scored 22,082 and 21,526, respectively.

More diverse camera implementations

As far as imaging goes, the Helio P90 can support camera systems of up to 48MP or a 24MP + 16MP dual camera setup. Additional support for cameras include 16MP 120-degree wide-angle cameras, 48MP 80-degree primary camera, and an 8MP 40-degree telephoto camera.

The new triple image signal processors (ISP) on the chip will also allow smartphones to support 14-bit RAW and 10-bit YUV photos. AI capabilities on the Helio P90 will also improve photos by providing faster face detection in real-time, low-light, or while in motion.

Videos will be improved with the Helio P90 having support for 48MP of up to 30fps without any shutter delay. 480fps at 720p will be supported by the chipset.

Faster connection speeds

Additional quality of life improvements on the Helio P90 include dual SIM dual VoLTE WorldMode with Cat-12(DL) / Cat-13(UL) 4G LTE modem. In more busy areas, the chipset promises to maintain fast speeds with 4×4 MIMO and 256AM. WiFi 2×2 802.11ac while Bluetooth will support the Bluetooth 5.0 standard.

Devices sporting the MediaTek Helio P90 are expected to arrive in the market in early 2019.
