MediaTek outs two new chips for Chromebooks

-

MediaTek unveiled two new chips designed for Chromebooks. The MediaTek MT8192 and MT8195 chipsets have been made to allow its partners to create sleek and lightweight Chromebooks while still being able to deliver longer battery life and better computing experience.

The MediaTek MT8195 is based on a 6nm TSMC process, which integrates an octa-core CPU with four Arm Cortex-A78 cores for power-intensive applications while four power-efficient Arm Cortex-A55 cores handles low-power and background tasks to maximize battery life.

It comes with a five-core Arm-Mali G57 GPU to allow for better visuals while it can support up to a quad-channel 2133MHz LPDDR4x RAM to have a larger memory pool and bandwidth for its processor. It can also power up to three displays at the same time for additional screen real estate.

Meanwhile, the MediaTek MT8192 uses a 7nm lithography process developed for more mainstream devices. It comes with four Arm Cortex-A76 cores and another four Arm Cortex-A55 cores to balance power efficiency and performance while its GPU is an Arm Mali-G57. It can support 2133MHz LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.1 storage as well as displays of up to 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz or FullHD+ at 120Hz

The MT8192 and MT8195 integrates a high performance AI Processing Unit (APU) to power a wide range of voice and vision-based applications. Their APU has been designed to seamlessly process voice ID recognition and voice control, speech and image recognition, speech to text, live translation, object recognition, background removal, noise reduction, image and video segmentation and gesture control, all in real time. They also support a dedicated audio digital processor to enable ultra-low power voice wakeup for voice assistants.

Both chips support Dolby Vision 7.1 surround sound and AV1 hardware codec for better viewing experience. They also come with native 4K HDR video decoding as well as support for PCIe 3.0 devices and USB 3.2 Gen1.

Chromebooks powered by the MT8192 are expected to hit on Q2 2021, while devices using the MT8195 are anticipated to make their appearance at a later date.
