Microsoft Surface 3 Review

As you all know, the Surface Pro 4 and the new Surface Book were announced earlier this week. But before it hits the shelves here in The Philippines, let’s take a look first on the previous model if it is still okay to purchase for those who people who don’t have luxury on buying the new one.

Design, Look and Feel

The specs that we have is the one running on Quad-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor with 4GB of RAM and 128GB SSD of internal storage. But there are also versions with 2GB of ram 256 internal storage and one with LTE capabilities if you like to surf on the go.

There are a lot of things to say with this notebook, it only weighs a little more than the iPad Air which is extremely portable and you’ll get a full-pledge windows 10 desktop operating system. It also got a nice 1920×1200 resolution so you’ll get alot of white space and awesome media experience in a 3:2 aspect ratio.

It also got a full-size USB 3.0 port, a mini display port, micro SD card slot for storage and what is also good is that it charges in a micro USB port so you’ll have plenty of wires in case you lost the one it comes with. Also, it charges through a powerbank just in case you’re on the go.

Performance

Given that it’s a hybrid tablet, you may doubt the performance of the device as a full pledged laptop. I also was iffy with the performance at first but after using it after a couple of days, it proved that it was capable. Web browsing and the usual task are snappy, I was able to browse using Google chrome with a lot of tabs on and pretty much handled the multi-tasking albeit some tabs are going to reload after a while because of the RAM. I also did some photoshopping and it was able to deliver smooth and snappy performance.

One thing that I noticed is that when you’re using the device overtime, you’ll experience some lags especially if you have multiple windows running. I pretty much fixed it with a simple restart but it will still be hassle if you’re already in the zone with what you’re doing. But hey, you should not really expect too much if you’re using this kind of device in the first place.

If you’re going to use it for work, photo editing and even gaming. The typecover keyboard is a must have. It provides an average typing experience considering the short travel and a very little trackpad. It’s not good but it gets the job done.

Is it worth the cost?

Well if you’re going to buy the Surface 3, you are obliged to buy the typecover keyboard so you must have to include this in your total expense. The Surface 3 really depends on how you will use it and what type of applications you’re going to run in it.

  • If you’re a college student, you can take wherever you want to go, you’ll get a free version of Microsoft Office, and you can even play some light gaming like minecraft. Pretty nice choice.
  • If you’re a traveler, it’s a hands down good choice because of its portability and average battery.
  • But if you’re doing a hardcore photo and video editor, a professional gamer and a game developer you may want to pass on this device as it will not deliver the kind of experience that you are expecting to, the Surface Pro 3 or the new Surface book and Surface Pro 4 are definitely a better choice.

So there you have it, the Microsoft Surface 3 is a good choice of a laptop/tablet because of its portability and above average performance. We could easily recommend this device.
