MSI GS70 Stealth Review

-

MSI has had a strong reputation in making performance-driven gaming laptops so it was not a surprise when they upped the game a bit with the GS70 Stealth.

Previous iterations of their gaming laptop were edgy and bulky which is typical of its category. The MSI GS70 is unlike any other gaming laptop — sleek and slim yet still packs a punch. The body is made up of aluminum chassis, right from the lid all the way to the interior of the keyboard and palm rest. Simple yet elegant; nothing fancy.

The dark brushed-metal finish surrounds the metallic body and minimizes smudges around it. Aside from the inconspicuous MSI logo on the lid, there’s also another dragon-inspired emblem or crest just below it, probably signifying the Gaming G Series of the device in MSI’s line-up. There’s even a suede-type fabric that lines part of the bottom end of the laptop.

The laptop has more than enough connectivity options than one could hope for in the device — the right side has two USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader and the charging port; on the left side are 2 more USB 3.0 ports, dual mini Display ports, full-sized HDMI port, Gigabit LAN port and 3 audio ports.

The large 17.3 inch full HD display certainly adds to the gaming experience and offers much more than just screen real estate. MSI opted to have the screen coated in matte finish to minimize the glare but it also affected the crispness of the display and the reduces maximum brightness.

Nevertheless, viewing angles are pretty good, refresh rates are at par, and 1080p resolution makes up for the shortcomings.

Then, there’s also the full-sized keyboard. The island-type keys are well spaced apart, has ample travel and flex; we’re actually more excited with the back-light features that were incorporated by SteelSeries into the laptop.

SteelSeries has been making really good keyboards for gaming and releases them under their label. However, they also have several collaborations like this one with MSI. To give you a better appreciation of the keyboard, check out this video:

So ok, Alienware laptops have those features for ages by the one implemented by SteelSeries on the GS70 has way more options and configurations.

MSI spared no expense in building this laptop — it comes with the latest and most powerful Haswell chip from Intel, packs 16GB of DDR3 RAM and runs on Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M. One can’t get any better than that at the GS70’s price point.

MSI GS70 specs:
17.3-inch full HD 1080p display @ 1920×1080 pixels, Anti-Glare
Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4GHz
Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5
Intel HD 4600 Graphics
16GB DDR3 RAM
256GB SSD + 750GB HHD
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
HDMI port
4 x USB 3.0 port
2 x mini Display port
Windows 8.1
6-cell Li-Ion battery

As for performance, we could not ask for anything more. The laptop packs a punch and can do pretty much everything we throw at it, even cranking up the gaming settings to high all the way.

We think the MSI GS70 has got it all for a gaming laptop — it’s pretty slick, has a large full HD display, high-performance processor and graphics chip, a good combo between an SSD and a HDD storage, plus that colorful backlit keyboard from SteelSeries.

The MSI GS70 has a suggested retail price of Php99,995. It looks pricey but you can’t get any other hardware configuration much better than that.
