It’s only been 6 months, but OPPO has updated their Reno series with the new OPPO Reno14 5G. They have implemented several upgrades for the new generation including the first telephoto for a base Reno device, but is this enough to warrant an upgrade?

The OPPO Reno14 5G sticks to a minimalist yet premium design as expected from the lineup. Its frame is made out of aluminum with rounded edges and its rear comes with glass with a smooth matte finish. At the back is a rectangular island to house its cameras with a reflective finish on its sides to highlight its cameras.
OPPO is offering the Reno14 5G in several colorways with the one we have here being the Luminous Green variant, which is geared more for those who prefer minimalism. If you want something that stands out, the Opal White model has what OPPO calls an Iridescent Mermaid Design that glows when it hits visible light.
Regardless of colorway preference, the smartphone’s chassis is rated for IP69 dust and water resistance. It can survive being submerged in up to 2 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. This allows you to comfortably take photos in swimming pools or waterfalls.
All of its buttons are clustered at the right-hand side with good tactility. At the bottom are its dual-SIM tray, USB-C port, and bottom-firing speakers. Unfortunately, there’s no option for storage expansion through microSD cards.
OPPO equips the Reno14 5G with a 6.59-inch 2760 x 1256 AMOLED display running at 120Hz protected by Gorilla Glass 7i. As expected, AMOLED displays provide good contrast and color reproduction. You are able to choose from Natural, Pro, and Vivid color modes, but Natural should suffice in most cases.
Its refresh rate can be adjusted to 60Hz, 90Hz, or 120Hz to suite your taste. 120Hz will feel better allowing for smoother scrolling and general use, but will drain your battery faster. Additionally, there’s support for Widevine L1 that enables 4K60fps with HDR content on streaming services like Prime Video and Netflix.
Brightness peaks at 1,200nits with its typical brightness reaching 600nits. In our experience, the Reno14 5G’s screen is bright enough to be used outdoors even when the sun is high.
They aren’t relying on hardware either to improve screen clarity. OPPO has implemented several software adjustments such as Image Sharpener and Video Color Boost to enhance your viewing experience.
Complementing the AMOLED screen is the smartphone’s dual stereo speakers. Its top and bottom-firing speakers work together for a better listening experience. The audio experience is pretty decent with the speakers getting loud while still maintaining good clarity.
The OPPO Reno14 5G sports triple cameras at the back: a 50MP f/1.8 OIS main camera with a Sony IMX 882 sensor, an 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide, and a 50MP f/2.8 OIS telephoto. This is also the first time that the base Reno variant has gotten a telephoto shooter, which is usually reserved for the Pro model. As for selfies, they can be taken with its 50MP f/2.0 front-facing lens.
Aside from its cameras, OPPO equips the Reno14 5G with AI Flash that aims to improve flash performance especially in dark scenes. You also have access to AI Editor 2.0 that lets you recompose photos, adjust face expressions, and erase unwanted objects within the frame.
This is the first time that a base numbered Reno series device to pack a telephoto lens. This lets you to take portraits that are more natural looking with the proper focal length and allows the Reno14 5G to have wide, ultrawide, and optical zoom capabilities to cover any kind of scenario that you may encounter while taking photos.
Image performance is largely similar across the 3 rear cameras. The ultrawide camera has less pixel count, sure, but photos come out sharp and vibrant with good color reproduction under optimal conditions. Low-light conditions are decent for both the main camera and telephoto with only a bit of noise in shadows, but the ultrawide camera suffers a bit more noise.
The Reno14 5G runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 8350 platform and is complemented by 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. While only pegged as a midrange chip, the Dimensity 8350 delivers smooth performance on daily use.
Mobile gamers that play graphically-intensive titles like Genshin Impact will be happy to hear that the device runs it at a steady 60fps at its Highest graphical settings. Benchmarks put the smartphone at around shy of 1.5 million in AnTuTu and 13,717 in PCMark Work 3.0.
OPPO bumps the battery capacity of the Reno14 5G to 6,000mAh over last generation’s 5,600mAh. Though capacity has been increased, charging speed remains the same with the device supporting 80W SuperVOOC.
Thanks to its higher capacity, we’re able to comfortably use the device throughout the day with plenty left for the next morning. Topping up takes less than an hour allowing you to get onto your business with minimal downtime.
The OPPO Reno14 5G has plenty to like from its minimalist design, IP69 rating that allows it to take photos and videos in freshwater, a fast and vibrant AMOLED display, decent performance, and flexible camera system that lets you capture near or far.
While it does have some upgrades, a 6-month turn around time for the series is just too quick and those who already have similarly-specced devices are will not likely to upgrade. It’s also comparatively expensive at PhP 34,999 to other brands’ midrange offerings.
Though it has its faults, the OPPO Reno14 5G is ultimately a solid device from the brand. With plenty to toy around with, it’s a device worth upgrading to if you want to focus on design, cameras, and flexibility.
