During the OPPO Inno Day, the brand showed off their next concept smartphone; the OPPO X 2021. The X 2021 employs a rollable design which is an interesting next step for smartphone design.
The OPPO X 2021 uses a flexible display alongside three proprietary technologies: Roll Motor powertrain, 2-in-1 Plate, and OPPO’s Warp Track high-strength scree laminate. Its Roll Motor powertrain uses two drive motors to generate constant force to smoothly move the display while ensuring stress is equally distributed. It also ensures that any unexpected pull or push will not damage the display.
Meanwhile, the 2-in-1 Plate support uses two support substrates with a comb-like structure are placed on either side of the X 2021 in order to prevent the screen from collapsing inward. On the other hand, its Warp Track increases the resilience of the display while only measuring 0.1mm at its thinnest.
The OLED display itself is rather freeform measuring as “small” as 6.7-inches and can extend up to 7.4-inches depending on your needs. It retracts into what OPPO calls a “dynamic frame” that’s composed of a fixed frame and a sliding frame. While the display changes size, the sliding frame and its rear battery cover move off the panel to provide better protection.
While it’s fun to think about the potential of a rollable smartphone, the OPPO X 2021 is still at its concept stage. OPPO has currently applied for 122 patents, 12 of which relate to the rollable mechanism of the device. We can’t wait what other innovations these kinds of devices offer once they actually hit the market sometime in the future.
