The news today may only highlight Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+, but that’s not all the awesome things that the company revealed yesterday: Samsung has announced a whopping 16 terabyte flash memory drive.
The announcement was really ground breaking, in case you don’t know: Solid state drives has great reading and writing speeds but they don’t produce the highest capacity. Last time we checked, the largest SSD was around 8-10 TB.
To give a little background (thanks to ArsTechnica), the drive uses Samsung’s latest 256 gigabit NAND flash die technology. Together with the 3D stacking technique to effectively fit more storage into the same space. Samsung boasted that their servers are containing 48 of these type of drives. It can work around 2 million input / output operations per second, comparing that the average consumer SSD can only topped at around 90,000 operations.
What’s more interesting that it all fits into 2.5-inch hard drive casing – only a little thicker that are found in the market.
Samsung did not announce the price, but they are planning to release it in the market. ArsTechnica estimates the costing around $5,000. That’s around 280,000 PHP – it’s expected that that much storage doesn’t come easily with the price.
