Seven Biggest Tech Brands banded to Next-Gen Video Codec!

Seven of the biggest brands in the industry of technology banded together to produce one awesome product – next generation standard for encoding and decoding video streams!

Microsoft, Google, Intel, Amazon, Cisco, Mozilla and Netflix are all working together to deliver next-generation tools for royalty-free and open source video codec. Netflix and Amazon are paying millions of dollars a year to license codecs which allows streaming media files so that we could watch multimedia files on our desktops, laptops, phones and tablets. This made watching movies, streaming series very expensive; to add to that, competing formats battle of over patents made it even harder for both companies to deliver files faster. That is why the 7 big companies came together and was called “The Alliance of Open Media”.

“The new Alliance is committing its collective technology and expertise to meet growing internet demand for top-quality video, audio, imagery, and streaming across devices of all kinds and for users worldwide.”

The Alliance will work with Cisco’s Thor project, Google’s VP9 and VP10 codec and Mozilla’s Daala initiative to spring board them to working with the new codec. The Alliance expects to add more members to join the project by next year.
