Transcend StoreJet 25C3 quick review

-

Storage capacity these days is becoming one of the most important aspects of technology, with games bloating up to tens of gigabytes and 4K video content becoming more and more mainstream. This is why even with the advent of new, fast storage such as SSDs, the classic portable hard drive is still in huge demand.

Trancend’s StoreJet 25C3, while still the same portable HDD you’d expect, is housed in an aluminum alloy enclosure weighing in at 136g and 9.95mm thick, a notable departure from the usual plastic enclosures on other portable HDDs.

Transcend also bundles in a free download of their Elite data management software, which offers automated backup and restore, as well as file encryption and cloud sync.

All this is to make sure your data is as secured as possible, while still being light enough to bring anywhere. Transcend also offers a three year warranty on these portable HDDs.

Here are the product specifications:

Dimensions 114.5mm x 78.5mm x 9.95mm (4.51″ x 3.09″ x 0.39″)
Weight 136g (4.80 oz)
Storage Media 2.5″ SATA HDD
Connection Interface USB 3.1 Gen 1 / USB 3.0 (backward compatible with USB 2.0)
Operating Voltage USB DC 5V
Operating Temperature 5°C (41°F)~55°C (131°F)
Certificates CE, FCC, BSMI

Of course, one of the more important thinks about storage is not how good it looks, but how it performs. We put the StoreJet 25C3 through its paces by running a couple of benchmark apps to see how it fares. Here’s our test bench specifications:

Laptop Test Bench – quick specifications
CPU Intel Core i7-4720HQ
VGA Nvidia GTX 960M
Memory 8GB
USB interface USB 3.0 type-A

Anvil’s Storage Utilities

CrystalDiskMark

HDTune Pro

While it’s definitely not as blazing fast as an SSD, the capacity options are something you should consider: Transcend offers the StoreJet 25C3 in 1TB and 2TB variants.
