Unboxing and First Impressions: Realme 5

The Realme 5 shares a lot in common with the Realme 5 Pro. Although the latter is a bit more premium when it comes to some specifications, the Realme 5’s lower position doesn’t mean it skimps on the important bits.

Unboxing

Inside the Realme 5’s white box is the smartphone, a silicone case, a MicroUSB cable, and a 5W 2A wall plug. To keep costs down, the brand has decided to remove the documentation as well as the standard pair of earphones.

Realme 5 Overview

Though the Realme 5 actually has a larger display compared to the Realme 5 Pro, its 6.5-inch LTPS IPS Dewdrop screen only comes with an HD+ resolution. Fortunately, the rather massive display comes with Gorilla Glass 3.

The Realme 5’s display is still notched although it isn’t as big as last generation’s smartphones. The Dewdrop notch hides a 13MP f/2.0 front-facing camera that also enables Face Unlock for the device.

The unit that we have is the Crystal Purple version. Though not as eye-catching as the Crystal Blue variant, the Purple colorway offers a minimalist design language only broken by the camera module and the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The color is also a bit dark that resembles more of a midnight purple. The crystal effect of the rear chassis will only be noticeable in certain lighting conditions.

The Realme 5 almost shares the same cameras as the Realme 5 Pro. Instead of a 48MP f/1.79 main camera, however, the device will come with a 12MP f/1.8 main shooter instead. Otherwise, the 8MP f/2.25 ultrawide, 2MP f/2.4 macro, and the 2MP f/2.4 portrait remains the same.

Inside the Realme 5 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665. Meant to replace the aging Snapdragon 660, the Snapdragon 665 comes with an upgraded Adreno 610 GPU and a new AI Engine.

To complement the chip, the smartphone will come with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage depending on the model. The device will also come with Dual-SIM capabilities and a MicroSD slot.

Powering the Realme 5 is a 5,000mAh battery. It is almost a 1,000mAh larger than the Realme 5 Pro, however, the Realme 5 doesn’t come with any kind of fast charging capabilities. Instead, the device relies on an industry-standard 5V 2A plug to charge its sizeable battery.

We are still in the testing phase for the Realme 5. Though it does have its downsides such as the HD+ screen, the Realme 5 also has a few interesting features like its 5,000mAh battery, a quad camera setup, and its new chipset.

The price, however, will make or break the Realme 5. Set to launch on October 3, 2019 in the Philippines, we’re going to wait a bit before we finally make a conclusion for the smartphone.
