The USB 3.0 Promoter Group, which is composed of companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Intel HP, Texas Instruments, Renesas Electronics, and ST Microelectronics, announced the USB 3.2 specifications. The improved bus will allow devices to transfer multiple lanes of data that will allow devices up to 20Gpbs of operation when using two lanes.
Before USB Type-C, USB hosts and devices were only designed as single-lane solutions. But as data become larger and more bandwidth was required from these devices, USB Type-C was released with multi-lane support. This means that if you have a device in the future that has a USB 3.2 certification, you won’t need to buy another cable given that you already have a USB Type-C cable.
There’s no date as two when USB 3.2 will be implemented in devices, but the specifications is going through a final draft review phase. It’s expected that the USB group will be formally releasing USB 3.2 at their Developer Days North America on September.
