Vivo unveiled under the screen fingerprint sensor technology at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Shanghai, China. Based on Qualcomm’s latest ultrasonic fingerprint technology, the under the screen fingerprint sensor technology was displayed on a prototype of a Vivo Xplay 6.

The ultrasonic fingerprint technology can be integrated to OLED display stack of up to 1.2mm thick (or 1200µm). The sensors also work even when the device is immersed under water. Aside from OLED displays, scanning fingerprints can also work up to 800µm of cover glass and up to 650µm of aluminum.

Qualcomm has advised that the fingerprint sensors will be available to OEMs for evaluation within 2017 and should arrive in devices in the first half of 2018.
