WD Shows-off Ginormous 8TB Helium-Sealed Drives

Helium. The element which is known for being an essential when it comes to parties or for mimicking the voice of fictional rodents. But WD did something radical when it came to using the gas — they used it for their drives.

Whoah! Wait a second, what’s with Helium and why is it important for WD drives? For the gyst of it, the the leading storage company has been able to enclose it inside their HDDs, making it full of advantages. The drives generate less noise, less vibration, have larger capacities, and less power consumption.

WD REDWD PURPLE

The event that we attended a while back featured WD’s new Helium-based drives, the WD 8TB Red and WD 8TB Purple. Both are large capacity drives (see their numbers) and are designed for their respective tasks and purposes. Purple drives are designed for video recording, a perfect capacity drive for CCTVs as error-protection features for crisp image quality and compatibility with multiple camera setups. WD Red Drives are for those that are into NAS systems, downloading files, creating local servers and the likes. The drives feature less noise and power consumption which is incredibly useful if used in groups.

The new drives also sport a new clean look, having a wholly white top instead of just a sticker denoting their group. WD also offers a 2.5″ Helium-based variant for the WD Red.

Will we able to see drives for the WD Black and WD Blue variants? We’ll have to wait and see.

On the side, the event also taught us how to dissect a hard-drive. It was fun but definitely recommended not to be done at home or if you still wish to recover your files.
