AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT unveiled, starts at $899

The AMD RDNA architecture has officially launched in two cards: the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT. Both GPUs will use chiplets with a main Graphics Compute Die and up to six Memory Cache Dies. AMD is also committing to power efficiency with this the XTX model capping out at 355W compared to the competition’s 541W on their flagship offering.

This generation, AMD is claiming up to a 54% performance per watt improvement over RDNA 2 thanks to their move to a smaller 5nm lithography. They have increased the number of Compute Units to 96 while their new AI accelerators promises up to 2.7x improvement compared to last generation.

Ray tracing performance will receive its needed improvement on AMD cards. RDNA 3 can handle up to 1.5x more rays with dedicated instructions. We are expecting improved performance on ray tracing as it is one of the weaknesses of RDNA 2. The new GPUs will also support DisplayPort 2.1, Display Stream Compression, and AV1.

FSR 3.0 was also unveiled at the launch. Details are still sparse on AMD’s new upscaling but early testing says that uit can deliver up to twice the performance on games. AMD is expected to fully launch FSR 3.0 sometime in 2023.
