SMGs fare incredibly well in CQC due to its exceptional fire rates. You can hose down enemies without having to aim down sights and it can pretty much deal significant damage in just a few seconds. SMGs, together with shotguns, can be good secondary weapons for snipers. It can also be a pretty decent primary when used in smaller maps.
As mentioned, SMGs have an incredibly fire rate. They can however, guzzle down bullets and magazines in a blink of an eye. Good fire control is needed to operate these weapons and while they do have good reload times, those precious few seconds can make you lose an enemy or worse, get killed yourself.
