First impressions: Samsung Galaxy S10+

-

The time has come. The Samsung Galaxy S10 series has been officially announced. Leading the pack is the Samsung Galaxy S10+. As the largest of the bunch, the S10+ is also the most powerful and feature-filled variant in the S10 series.

The new punchhole display

Samsung has abstained from putting a notch in their previous efforts such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 series and S9 range. This time around, Samsung is using a punchhole design on their screen.

Measuring at 6.4-inches, the Samsung Galaxy S10+’s Infinity-O display comes with a Dynamic AMOLED screen with a 93.1% screen-to-body ratio. This means that the bezels have been almost removed in the S10+’s display.

The screen on the Samsung Galaxy S10+ is also rather tall as is almost iconic in most flagship Galaxy smartphones. With an aspect ratio of 19:9, the smartphone’s display has a resolution of 3040 x 1440.

The display also houses the smartphone’s under-the-display fingerprint scanner. Samsung is using their brand new ultrasonic technology, which allows the scanner to sense fingerprints faster and more accurately than conventional under-the-display fingerprint scanners in the market.

Breaking up the display of the device is its dual front-facing cameras. The 10MP Dual Pixel AF front main shooter is backed by an 8MP depth sensing camera. This allows the smartphone to produce better bokeh effects on selfies, UHD videos, and Live Focus effects.

Triple cameras on a flagship Samsung smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy S10+ is the first flagship-class smartphone to have triple rear cameras; a trend started within the Samsung range by the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018). This time, however, the brand is putting everything they have learned in the photography space into the S10+.

The triple rear cameras are composed of a 12MP Dual Aperture, Dual Pixel main camera, a 16MP ultrawide FF shooter, and a 12MP telephoto zoom lens. This allows the S10+’s rear cameras to have completely cover most focal lengths that a typical consumer would need.

Aside from taking better photos, the Samsung Galaxy S10+’s rear cameras is now packed with what the brand calls True Vision Multi-Camera. Essentially, the triple rear cameras of the device is able to capture UHD videos at 60fps with HDR1-+ support. Samsung is also promising SuperSteady action camera action in FullHD for clearer videos and minimized shaking.

Faster and more storage space

Inside the Samsung Galaxy S10+ is an Exynos 9820 chip backed by 8GB or 12GB of RAM depending on the model. Samsung is promising up to 33% better CPU performance and 37% increase in GPU power while decreasing the power consumption by 15% compared to the Samsung Galaxy S9.

Storing files will also be much easier on the device. The vanilla variant of the Samsung Galaxy S10+ will come with 128GB of internal stoarge, which should be enough for most users.

If you’re a guilty hoarder of photos, movies, and music in your smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ can also be had with a 1TB of internal storage. Both variants will have a MicroSD slot, which will support up to 512GB MicroSD cards for a total of 1.5TB of storage space.

The next generation of wireless charging

Of course, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ will have wireless charging fitting the WPC qi charging standard. The device, however, will be able to charge peripherals such as the Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Fit and Fit E, and Galaxy Watch active. Of course, it can also charge other peripherals and smartphones that support wireless charging.
