In the final act of Expeditions Rome, you get to undertake the main story mission, Ambiorix Warning. In this mission, you and your team are tasked to “die with honor” and fight the relentless barbarians. How do you actually beat this mission? Are there alternate endings? Read this guide to know more!
This quest is somewhat connected to another main story mission, The End of the Aedui. Read this guide for more details.
This is one of those gaming moments in which you are scripted to lose. The die with honor is literally what you need to do. Your team must fall in order to progress. Once your team falls to the infinite waves of enemies, Vitellius Lurco’s team heads into the fight to “help” you. The entrance of Lurco also disables the constant spawning of enemy units.
Try to fight Ambiorix and Cativolcus first and take down the archers if you can. This greatly helps in the second phase of the battle. You can also bring in Greek Fire and other consumables to at least help Lurco’s fight by igniting or poisoning choke points.
You can also treat this mission as a challenge. With the number of enemy units flowing in, you can take advantage of it and complete several challenges. Difficult ones, like completely breaking the morale of 5 enemies, can be easily done here. You can also try to last as long as you can before your team meets its demise.
Absolutely nothing significant changes depending on your conversation with Ambiorix prior to the ambush. It always leads to him flanking your team and springing the trap. The only difference is that you can either take a humble or prideful approach to appease your praetorians. Other than that, Ambiorix being a traitor is scripted into the story and nothing can change it.
A reward for defeating Ambiorix, whether you do it as your team or as Lurco, is his unique spear. Ambiorix’s Spear grants the ambush status effect whenever a character is in cover. When ambushing, your character automatically attacks the first target that steps into melee range. This can be an effective weapon in the hands of a wandering Veles.
Ambiorix also drops a Sickle that you can use in the story mission, End of the Aedui.
