There are 4 acts in Expeditions Rome:
Once you complete an act, there is no turning back. You will be warned about this everytime you unlock the final mission for the act. Before advancing, try to complete the side quests and get the unique weapons and armor.
Act 4 is the climax of the game. This is where your choices from the previous acts all boil down to. This act is a determining factor in the game’s ending so make sure to save before diving in. You can restart from a savepoint and change your choices here to also view the other endings.
At the end of each act, your character goes back to Rome to face your family and be acquainted with politics. This is also a point of no return so do the side quests before you decide to finish and advance to the next act. It is also worth noting that most of the important quests for your companions happens here. If you want to grow more in your relationship with them, make sure to complete their quests as soon as you can.
If you are a completionist and would like to color the whole map blue, it would take more or less 45+ hours to do a single run in Expeditions: Rome. I was able to finish the game during with this time on Medium difficulty. The time includes doing the side quests, conquering the whole map, and capping the legion camp
Obviously, the higher the difficulty, the longer it would take for you to finish the game. If you want to make it quick and are only after the story, set it to Easy for quick and painless battles. You can tweak the difficulty vie the Options menu. Note that changing the difficulty in the middle of the game heavily affects the acquisition of the achievement related to your preset difficulty.
