In Expeditions Rome, you get to meet your patron, Lucullus, in the main story line. He mostly acts as a mentor to you, providing assistance and guidance on the politics and military issues in the game. But at a certain point in the game, he meets tragedy and it is up for the player to investigate what happened to him. So, can you save Lucullus? Can you keep him alive? Read this guide to know more.
Depending on your choices in the prelude, you will be given a choice to immediately go and meet Lucullus or delay for a few days to help a friend. Choosing either will not change anything. Lucullus will always meet his demise and you cannot change that as it is tied to the story itself.
The best route is to choose to help Caeso and delay the trip to Egypt. In order to first unlock this choice, you must join Caeso in drinking in the marketplace of Rome. Once you complete his quest, you get the option to stay for a while in Rome and delay your trip to Egypt. As said before, not choosing this will not alter Lucullus’ fate so might as well get the most out of it and unlock Caeso’s subquest in the next acts of the game.
Obviously, Caeso will put the the blame on himself for the death of Lucullus due to the delay. You can either reinforce this belief or prevent him from thinking such. Either way, helping Caeso opens up his storyline further in the prelude between Acts 2 and 3.
When visiting Lucullus during the beginning of Act 2, you can equip weapons and armor to defend yourself against the assassins. Being out of Rome, you can use your items and weapons without any problems from this point. The game does not prompt you about this, so wear some steel before heading into the fray!
In Expeditions Rome, Lucullus is the Consul of Rome, one of the two most powerful men in the Senate. He acts as your patron and your father-figure after you run from Rome. He also acts as a powerful ally, shielding you from the political quagmire that is the Roman senate. As Consul, he grants you command of a legion to pacify regions for the glory of Rome.
You get to meet Lucullus together with Julius Caesar during the opening stages of the game.
He might be based on the real-life Roman consul, Lucullus.
In the ending, it is mentioned that the mother of the protagonist admitted on her deathbed that she was very close with Lucullus. So close they were that her children, you and your sister, are revealed to be his.
