You cannot change the difficulty of the game once you pick it here. Be sure to choose one where you are comfortable with and play with either the Merciful and Standard first to familiarize yourself with the system.
Difficulty has a direct impact to not only the damage numbers but to also the number of objectives in a missions. For example, Merciful spawns fewer Seed Carriers compared to Standard difficulty.
Definitely. Lore-wise you are but a single ship against a plague and an imminent invasion. In terms of gameplay, it is hard as you’ll often find yourself outnumbered, sometime even 4 to 1. Initially. Once you get the hang of things, you’ll be making the right decisions and choosing the best opportunities to progress the game. Take it slow and learn from your mistakes, then apply possible solutions during your next sortie. Experiment and advance slowly. Most of the mistakes can be prevented by proper positioning and good team roster.
Also, take advantage of multiple saves. Make one on the ship and one at the start of battles. This way, you can always reset if you make a mistake that can cost you the whole campaign. It can be pretty frustrating but once you get the hang of things, you’ll find yourself breezing through the game in the latter half.
Grand Master mode is for hardcore players as it limits the player to only one save. Regardless of the difficulty, make one wrong move and your campaign may be well on its end. Grand Master mode can be played in any difficulty, including the easiest, Merciful.
Iron Man setting, for those unfamiliar, limits the player to only one save and when the player dies or loses, the save is deleted. This means that all work up to that point of failure is gone with the wind. Unfortunately, this challenging difficulty setting is absent from the game. We may see it be included via future updates like other similar games.
