Chaos Gate – Who Is The Final Boss?

Mortarion Is The Final Boss

Chaos Gate Final Boss Mortarion

Mortarion, the fallen Primarch of the Death Guard makes his appearance as Chaos Gate’s final boss. Hidden until the very last mission, Mortarion has planned the Edict’s entry, the capture of Kadex, and the fall of the Inquisitor. His main goal is to finally destroy the Grey Knight’s Supreme Grand Master, Kaldor Draigo, due to a personal vendetta against the wandering knight.

Prepare For The Fight

Purgation Ritual

The condition to reach the endgame is to research the “Purgation Ritual” technology. This is a point of no return. Note that completion of the research will force you to do the last 3 missions of the game. As long as you don’t start researching, the game is open for farming and gathering better equipment. Make sure to prepare for the fight as fighting Mortarion is mostly a test of your team’s endurance and how you compose your initial roster.

Chaos Gate Final Boss – How To Beat

Mortarion Battle

Chaos Gate’s final battle can be difficult if you don’t have the proper lineup and equipment for the battle. The finale is basically a 9-man sortie including Kaldor Draigo to stop Mortarion and his deadly Bloom. The mission requires you to have 8 properly equipped Grey Knights and they will be split into two teams. One team directly confronts Mortarion while another team guards the gates. It can be pretty bloody especially if you start with the wrong team composition.

The battle is also obnoxiously long so prepare to sit for about an hour or so. I also encountered some slowdowns (the first of my playthrough) due to the number of corpses present. A simple reload of the game fixes this issue.

Final Boss Battle Steps

  1. Player starts with the Vanguard Team against Mortarion
  2. Once Mortarion hits 160 HP, he will summon a Poxus Root that only Kaldor Draigo can destroy. As long as the Root is standing, Mortarion is immune to damage
  3. After the Poxus Root is destroyed, the battle transitions to the Rearguard Team
  4. The Rearguard must prevent enemy units from reaching the gate as they will join the battle against the already disadvantaged Vanguard Team
  5. Chaos units attacking the gate are mostly composed of normal Death Guard Space Marines accompanied by some Blightlord Terminators.
  6. After clearing all enemy units near the gate, the fight goes back to the Vanguard Team
  7. Same as before, once Mortarion’s HP hits 120, he will summon the Root of Necrosus. Again, only Kaldor Draigo can interact with the root
  8. Once the Root of Necrosus is destroyed, the battle then goes back to the Rearguard Team
  9. Clearing the gate of enemies throws the fight back to the Vanguard Team
  10. Whittling Mortarion’s health to 80 forces him to spawn Root of Mortus. Same as before, the root must be destroyed first to damage Mortarion
  11. The Rearguard must defend the gate against the numerous Blightlord Terminators, a Foetid Blight Drone and a Helbrute.
  12. After clearing the gate, the fight goes back to the Vanguard Team
  13. Mortarion summons a Helbrute to fight your team once his HP reaches 40. He also summons another seed, Root of Dolorus, to prolong the fight
  14. Fight goes back to the Rearguard Team. Final wave is composed of only Death Guard Space Marines and Blightlord Terminators. Problem is, they are numerous
  15. After all enemies near the gate are either dead or have passed, the battle again reverts to the Vanguards
  16. Destroy the final root to finally defeat Mortarion. Use all that you have here as this is the final part of the battle
  17. The battle ends when Mortarion’s HP reaches 0. Congratulations! You’ve beaten Chaos Gate Daemonhunters. Give yourself a pat on the back and get some warm chocolate, a burger, or something. You’ve earned it.

Vanguard Team – Team That Fights Chaos Gate Final Boss

High-Mobility Is A Requirement

Mortarion Arena

As Mortarion frequently moves around the map, make good use of high-mobility Grey Knights to keep dealing damage consistently per turn. Inceptors with the upgraded Teleport skill are good for this task but you also need to watch out for their HP as they are somewhat fragile.

Stun Is The Way To Win

Stun Chaos Gate Final Boss Mortarion

Stunning Mortarion continuously with attacks leaves him open to disables. When stunned, Mortarion’s parts can be severed to lessen his effectiveness in the battlefield. You can bring high Stun weapons in the fight to make the transition faster or just rely on Kaldor Draigo’s attacks.

High Critical Can Help

Mortarion has a passive that severely curtails the chances of landing a critical. This significantly reduces the chances of landing a critical by 50%. However, this can be mitigated by having a high enough critical to bypass his shields and defenses.

Attack With Kaldor Draigo To Get Mortarion’s Aggro

Mortarion vs Kaldor Draigo

Take advantage of Mortarion’s anger against Kaldor Draigo and use it against him. Kaldor can simply attack Mortarion to get his ire and aggro, leaving your team to clean the rest of the map or deal damage.

Apothecary To Heal Kaldor Draigo

A condition in the final boss battle is that Kaldor Draigo must survive the fight. He will also be heavily under fire as only Draigo can interact with the roots to damage Mortarion. Make sure to have an Apothecary at hand to heal Draigo whenever things become dire as Mortarion will continuously spawn heavy hitters inside the arena.

Fight Transitions After A Root Is Destroyed

Kaldor Draigo attacking the root

The Vanguard’s fight against Mortarion ends whenever a root is destroyed by Kaldor Draigo. Concentrate on wiping out remaining enemy units before having Kaldor interact with the root. This allows you to be more efficient in using your turn.

Rearguard Team – Gate Guardians

Deploy Tanks & Fire Supports

Deploy Tanks

Although the enemy is numerous, you can plop your huge tanks in certain choke points to block paths. Use your Justicars and Paladins well here and make sure to heal them frequently with an Apothecary.

Concentrate On Guarding The Gate

Enemies won’t go out of their way to attack you. If none of your Grey Knights are around, they will steadily just run to the gate. Cover all sides and concentrate your forces directly at the front of the gate. It can also be helpful to get an Interceptor to weed out the weaker ones before they reach the portal.

Use AOE Skills, Grenades, & Knockback

Use AOE Grenades

One AP should translate to one kill. That is probably the most optimal solution to the waves here. If you find it hard to reliably kill targets with one hit, make use of Grenades or area of effect abilities to whittle down the waves. Knockback weapons are also useful here as, if properly aimed, they can knock off 1 or 2 Death Guard Space Marines to the depths for the price of 1 AP and a Grenade.
