Mortarion, the fallen Primarch of the Death Guard makes his appearance as Chaos Gate’s final boss. Hidden until the very last mission, Mortarion has planned the Edict’s entry, the capture of Kadex, and the fall of the Inquisitor. His main goal is to finally destroy the Grey Knight’s Supreme Grand Master, Kaldor Draigo, due to a personal vendetta against the wandering knight.
The condition to reach the endgame is to research the “Purgation Ritual” technology. This is a point of no return. Note that completion of the research will force you to do the last 3 missions of the game. As long as you don’t start researching, the game is open for farming and gathering better equipment. Make sure to prepare for the fight as fighting Mortarion is mostly a test of your team’s endurance and how you compose your initial roster.
Chaos Gate’s final battle can be difficult if you don’t have the proper lineup and equipment for the battle. The finale is basically a 9-man sortie including Kaldor Draigo to stop Mortarion and his deadly Bloom. The mission requires you to have 8 properly equipped Grey Knights and they will be split into two teams. One team directly confronts Mortarion while another team guards the gates. It can be pretty bloody especially if you start with the wrong team composition.
The battle is also obnoxiously long so prepare to sit for about an hour or so. I also encountered some slowdowns (the first of my playthrough) due to the number of corpses present. A simple reload of the game fixes this issue.
As Mortarion frequently moves around the map, make good use of high-mobility Grey Knights to keep dealing damage consistently per turn. Inceptors with the upgraded Teleport skill are good for this task but you also need to watch out for their HP as they are somewhat fragile.
Stunning Mortarion continuously with attacks leaves him open to disables. When stunned, Mortarion’s parts can be severed to lessen his effectiveness in the battlefield. You can bring high Stun weapons in the fight to make the transition faster or just rely on Kaldor Draigo’s attacks.
Mortarion has a passive that severely curtails the chances of landing a critical. This significantly reduces the chances of landing a critical by 50%. However, this can be mitigated by having a high enough critical to bypass his shields and defenses.
Take advantage of Mortarion’s anger against Kaldor Draigo and use it against him. Kaldor can simply attack Mortarion to get his ire and aggro, leaving your team to clean the rest of the map or deal damage.
A condition in the final boss battle is that Kaldor Draigo must survive the fight. He will also be heavily under fire as only Draigo can interact with the roots to damage Mortarion. Make sure to have an Apothecary at hand to heal Draigo whenever things become dire as Mortarion will continuously spawn heavy hitters inside the arena.
The Vanguard’s fight against Mortarion ends whenever a root is destroyed by Kaldor Draigo. Concentrate on wiping out remaining enemy units before having Kaldor interact with the root. This allows you to be more efficient in using your turn.
Although the enemy is numerous, you can plop your huge tanks in certain choke points to block paths. Use your Justicars and Paladins well here and make sure to heal them frequently with an Apothecary.
Enemies won’t go out of their way to attack you. If none of your Grey Knights are around, they will steadily just run to the gate. Cover all sides and concentrate your forces directly at the front of the gate. It can also be helpful to get an Interceptor to weed out the weaker ones before they reach the portal.
One AP should translate to one kill. That is probably the most optimal solution to the waves here. If you find it hard to reliably kill targets with one hit, make use of Grenades or area of effect abilities to whittle down the waves. Knockback weapons are also useful here as, if properly aimed, they can knock off 1 or 2 Death Guard Space Marines to the depths for the price of 1 AP and a Grenade.
