In Digimon Survive, Ryo’s death hits the player during Part 3 of the game. However, is this death preventable? Can you actually save Ryo? Read this guide to know how to prevent Ryo’s death, effects of affinity, what happens then, and more. Obviously, spoilers ahead.
Unfortunately, you need to clear the game first in order to prevent Ryo’s death. As this game is a visual novel, multiple playthroughs are needed for you to unlock the true ending of the game. Saving Ryo also unlocks a fourth ending, allowing you to view the “Truth” path of the game, essentially the true ending of Digimon Survive. With that said, there is no way to save Ryo during your first playthrough.

Although useless during your first playthrough, you need to raise Ryo’s affinity for him to come back to his senses and push through with the team. To do this, you need to take advantage of interactions with him during Part 1 to Part 3. Good thing is that the game gives you more chances of interacting with Ryo in New Game Plus. If your affinity is not high enough, the choice to save Ryo vanishes and you’ll be stuck with the three endings offered in the first playthrough.

The very apparent change is that Ryo is now part of scenes that you are familiar with in your first run. Although they mostly flow unchanged, Ryo’s insight adds flavor to the exchanges and scenes. He is also not as spineless as before and is back to his senses after you save him. This makes the already familiar ride a somewhat new experience.
Sad that Kunemon had to die in the first run? Now get to experience him and his growing relationship with Ryo in the True Ending. Saving Ryo also allows you to collect all Digimons in the game as you get to see Kunemon’s Mega form.

Saving Ryo from his death also unlocks the game’s True Ending. This locks you to the real ending of Digimon Survive, changing a lot of things from your first playthrough. Best play the game through this ending to get closures for not just Ryo, but also some characters that died in the default story.
